What is FSII (Fuel System Icing Inhibitor)?
Fuel System Icing Inhibitor (FSII) is a chemical additive used in jet fuel to prevent icing in the fuel system during flight in cold temperatures. When aircraft operate in upper air layers or in extremely cold weather conditions, small amounts of water in the fuel can freeze, which can block fuel lines and filters. FSII acts as an anti-icing solution by lowering the freezing point of water in the fuel, so that ice does not form, thus ensuring a safe and reliable fuel flow to the engines.
Why is FSII important?
Icing in the fuel system can lead to serious problems during flight, such as reduced fuel supply to the engines and potentially dangerous situations. FSII is therefore essential to maintain safety, especially in extreme climatic conditions. In Norway, with its cold climate and variable weather conditions, FSII is particularly important to ensure safe flights in the winter months and in higher air layers.
FSII is used in both helicopters, commercial and military aircraft to ensure reliable operation regardless of temperature. For Norwegian airlines and operators, it is critical to use FSII in winter fuel to prevent ice formation, especially on flight routes that go over the northern regions or other icy regions.
How does FSII work?
FSII works by binding to the water molecules naturally found in the fuel. When the temperature drops, FSII prevents the water from freezing into ice. This keeps the fuel lines free of ice plugs that can block the engine's access to fuel. FSII has become a standard in many types of fuel, including the Jet A-1, especially during winter operations.
Our approach to FSII
At AFSN, we ensure that our fuel is supplied with FSII when required, so our customers can be confident that their aircraft can operate safely, even in the coldest conditions. We work continuously to maintain the highest standards of safety and quality in the fuel we supply, so that both commercial and private operators can trust that their aircraft is protected against ice forming in the fuel system.
